Listen or Follow Along
Pain Can Speak in More Than One Way
Pain can carry several kinds of information:
- an immediate physical signal to stop, move, or get appropriate help;
- a response to a present-day emotional strain or boundary;
- a doorway into an old physical or emotional experience; or
- some combination of these.
An intuitive association is a doorway, not proof of cause. If a person, event, or emotion comes to mind when you attend to a body area, you can explore it without declaring that it caused the pain. Likewise, books that associate body parts with particular emotions can offer prompts, but your own Body YES or Body NO outranks a generalized interpretation. Your body has not read those books.
Medication and other forms of appropriate care can be a blessing when pain is too intense to think or listen. When you are closer to okay, you may have more capacity to ask what physical action, emotional attention, or deeper support is needed.
Practice: Listen to a Smaller Signal
Do not begin with the most overwhelming pain. Choose a smaller discomfort or a place that simply does not feel quite right.
If it is safe, close your eyes and take a slow breath. Touch the area gently if that feels comfortable, or bring your attention to it without touch. Ask as you might ask a friend:
What do you want to tell me?
Wait without demanding an answer. You may receive words, an image, a feeling, or silence. If the inner critic arrives first, acknowledge it and soften the question.
Then ask:
What do you need?
You are not promising to do whatever comes to mind. Listening is different from obeying. You can negotiate, imagine offering what is wanted, or choose a baby step that is a YES for you. Thank your body for whatever communication is available—even if the first answer is silence.
Tapping: Beginning to Listen
Side of the Hand: Even though I’m really resistant to listening to my
body… and I’m not really sure I want to hear what it has to say… I am still a
good person… and maybe I’ll give it a shot.
Even though I’m not getting this right away… I didn’t hear a thing… and that
really frustrates me—or I heard it and didn’t believe it, or I heard it and
it’s confusing—I am still a good person… and I’m learning to love and accept
and listen to my body.
Even though I’m really resistant to hearing what it has to say… I’m open to
establishing a better relationship with my body.
Top of the Head: I don’t really want to hear this.
Eyebrow: What if it says what I don’t want to hear?
Side of the Eye: What if it says something I can’t do?
Under the Eye: I’m afraid.
Under the Nose: I guess I could just listen.
Chin: It can’t be any worse than what is going on right now.
Collarbone: I’m not listening to it right now.
Under the Arm: I can always tune it back out again.
Top of the Head: And I don’t have to do what it says.
Eyebrow: It might be nice to know what would bring relief.
Side of the Eye: I can’t be any more lost than I am right now.
Under the Eye: Maybe it will ask me for something nice.
Under the Nose: Maybe it will give me good insight.
Chin: Maybe my relationship with my body will improve…
Collarbone: …and I’ll start feeling better.
Under the Arm: I can always give it a try.
Take a slow breath.
Tapping: Baby Steps at the Right Pace
Side of the Hand: Even though I have this big pain… and it’s overwhelming…
and I’m afraid of what I’m going to find there… and I have my reasons for
that… I deeply and completely accept where I am… and choose to take baby
steps… perfect steps… at the perfect pace for me.
Top of the Head: I’m really impatient.
Eyebrow: I need to get rid of this pain.
Side of the Eye: I need to fix me.
Under the Eye: It’s overwhelming.
Under the Nose: I need a quick fix.
Chin: I thought EFT was a quick fix!
Collarbone: I want to quickly fix myself.
Under the Arm: My body has its own perfect pace.
Top of the Head: I’m open to the possibility of accepting that… and
developing a really strong relationship with my body’s intelligence.
Take a slow breath.
Practice: Listen to What Feels Good or Neutral
Find a place such as the back of your hand, nose, or forehead that feels good or at least neutral. Touch it if that feels comfortable. Be with it for a moment and notice whether it has anything to say.
If you can, let the good or neutral feeling become brighter, warmer, or more vivid. Thank that part of your body. Imagine the quality radiating to the rest of you.
When pain is intense, keep this brief—perhaps a few breaths or a minute. The point is not to deny what hurts. It is to remember that some well-being may still be available in the body and to let yourself make contact with it.
If a painful area gives too much information at once, ask for one emotion word: anger, frustration, overwhelm, hurt, or whatever comes. Ask whether it feels current, from the past, or both. If there is no clarity, tap first with the specific physical sensation and notice whether more information becomes available.
