Trauma Can Leave Protective Patterns
Trauma includes not only major events, but experiences that brought shock, helplessness, fear, or a sense of being unable to fight or get away. An event that looked small to someone else may still have been a trauma to your system.
Afterward, the body may continue a protective pattern: bracing, shallow breathing, chronic vigilance, numbness, disconnection, or muscular holding. Later pain does not prove that a particular trauma caused a physical condition. It can, however, make an old event or protective response worth exploring as a possible doorway for relief.
Approach Specific Events Gently
When an old event comes to mind, notice its felt intensity from 0 to 10. Feeling numb or blank can also be information. There is no need to dig for memories or force a connection. Material may become available as your system feels safer and your support grows.
If an experience makes it hard to stay present, pause, ground yourself, and choose skilled trauma-aware support. Releasing a protective pattern works best as a dialogue that is comforting, supported, safe, listening, and free of blame.
Tapping: When You Do Not Know the Trauma
Place a hand softly on the area that has your attention, if touch is comfortable. Take a breath and notice its felt quality. Does it seem cold, angry, hurt, sad, frozen, or something else? Your best guess is enough.
Side of the Hand: Even though I may have trauma stored right here… and I
don’t know exactly what it is… I may not need to. I give this part of my body
permission… to release the trauma in a surprisingly healthy way.
Even though I may have some frozen trauma in this part of my body… I’m sorry. I
send love and comfort to this part of my body. All the love and comfort that it
didn’t get back then.
Top of the Head: This stored trauma in my body.
Eyebrow: Maybe it’s stuck right there.
Side of the Eye: I send love and forgiveness to that part of my body.
Under the Eye: I give it permission to release the trauma.
Under the Nose: I give my energy permission to flow.
Chin: It’s been frozen for so long.
Collarbone: I give my body permission to heal.
Under the Arm: I appreciate all of me.
Take a slow breath.
Notice what your body communicates next. A new sensation or uncomfortable signal is not a command to push deeper; it is an invitation to choose whether to listen, pause, ground, or seek support.
