Watch, Then Practice

Guided Practice: Good Morning, Sunshine

If you are hearing these words, it is time to begin waking gently. You are here, and you have done what you could to rest and let the body renew.

Notice the pillows, mattress, blankets, and air around you. Feel how the bed is still supporting you. Stretch the legs under the covers and wiggle the toes. There is no need to leap instantly into full alertness.

Let awareness return through the feet and legs. If it feels good, stretch the arms and wiggle the fingers. Invite circulation and sensation back into parts that have been quiet through the night.

Take a slow breath that seems to reach all the way to the toes. As you exhale, let go of the stale night air. Breathe in the freshness of morning and invite the body toward wakefulness at its own workable pace.

Remember one or two things you appreciate from the past night or day. Perhaps there was a kind smile, a well-timed message, a moment of connection, or a few minutes when sleep felt especially safe and sweet. Let appreciation be felt in the body rather than turned into a demand to be positive.

Your presence makes a difference. The change you bring today may be modest: a smile you once could not offer, a more grounded response, an idea, a boundary, or a moment of real attention. Small steps participate in changing the world.

If grogginess is here, let it be here. Tired does not mean wrong. Imagine tucking the groggy feeling comfortably into bed while the more wakeful parts begin to stretch and play. You do not have to exile one state to welcome the other.

Take another breath. Feel the morning air, the movement of the body, and the gradual shift in energy. When you are ready, roll or rise in a way that feels supportive.

Consider how you might continue this gentleness after leaving the bed. Brush your teeth with attention. Wash your face with tenderness. Make a warm drink. Remember one thing you would like to create or offer today.

You are not required to have a perfect morning. You are practicing a different relationship with waking—one that includes your body, your needs, and the life you are entering.

Good morning, Sunshine.
