Stop Calculating the Disaster
Clock-watching often turns wakefulness into a countdown: how little sleep is left, how badly tomorrow will go, and how wrong the body is for not obeying. Frustration carries energy for change, but that activation may be the opposite of what rest needs.
Feel the bed or chair beneath you. If you are tapping at night, use quiet touch or hold each point and breathe.
Tapping: Awake Without the Cascade
Side of the Hand: Even though I am so frustrated, I work hard, I am tired,
and I need the rest. Why am I awake now?
I keep looking at the clock, calculating what is left, and getting angrier. I
acknowledge how much I want sleep.
Top of the Head: I am frustrated with myself.
Eyebrow: Why do I not just sleep?
Side of the Eye: I am staring at the clock.
Under the Eye: Doing sleep math.
Under the Nose: Predicting how exhausted I will be.
Chin: And not really listening to my body.
Collarbone: I am listening to the hamsters.
Under the Arm: They are very loud.
Top of the Head: What if I take a breath?
Eyebrow: And become present with my body?
Side of the Eye: Hello, body.
Under the Eye: Humans do wake sometimes.
Under the Nose: I can look around and check what is true.
Chin: Do I need water, movement, the bathroom, comfort, or reassurance?
Collarbone: I can respond to the need without starting a catastrophe.
Under the Arm: I reassure myself as much as the present facts allow.
Top of the Head: Maybe waking does not have to mean the night is ruined.
Eyebrow: I invite my body back toward rest.
Take a breath. You can leave a hand at one point and repeat quietly: *I am
frustrated, and I am staying kind enough to listen.*
