Guided Practice: Gentle Loving Sleep

Settle into the bed or another supported place. If this is not a safe time to drift toward sleep, save the practice for later. Keep your eyes open if that feels better.

Take a slow, comfortable breath. Notice your toes. Wiggle them gently and feel whatever touches them: blanket, socks, sheets, or open air. Notice the temperature. Let attention arrive in the feet.

On another breath, feel the air enter and leave. It may feel cooler coming in and warmer going out. Let yourself become present with the body without demanding that it relax.

Look or listen around the room. Notice what tells you where and when you are. If there is a practical concern that needs attention, respond to it. If this space is sufficiently safe for rest, let that current information register.

Now imagine holding a very young part of yourself. This does not need to be a literal memory. It can be an image of tenderness, vulnerability, or the part that feels small when it is time to sleep.

Let that little one settle against your shoulder or chest if the image feels welcome. Imagine gently touching their hair or face. Feel your own heartbeat, or place a hand where you can sense warmth and movement. Let the younger part receive the rhythm of the adult body that is here now.

Allow the breath to become easier if it wants to. You do not have to wonder whether someone else will come. In this practice, you are offering company. Feel the blanket’s warmth and the support beneath both of you.

Notice any frozen place, furrowed brow, tight jaw, or lifted shoulder. Rather than forcing it open, bring a gentle hand or kind attention there. Let warmth reach the place that has been bracing. It may soften, remain the same, or show you what else it needs.

You might say quietly:

I am here with you.*
You do not have to earn this care.
*We can rest for this moment.

Let the day’s unfinished tasks remain outside this small circle of care. Tomorrow will still be available. Right now, your only practice is to stay near the vulnerable part and receive support from the bed, breath, warmth, and room.

If sleep begins to come, there is nothing more to complete. Let the words fade. Let the younger part rest in adult arms. Allow yourself to drift toward gentle, loving sleep—or simply remain here, accompanied and resting.
