Replace the Stick with an Invitation
A few intentional minutes can change the felt shape of a morning. When the first message is You are already late—move!, the body may begin preparing for battle before sleep is even over. A transition that includes something pleasant can make getting up less adversarial.
The invitation must still respect real commitments. Gentleness is not the absence of a schedule; it is a different way of accompanying yourself through one.
Tapping: A Gentler Transition
Feel your feet, the bed, or the chair supporting you. Let the body know where you are before asking it to change gears.
Side of the Hand: Even though I have been using the stick because that is
what I learned, I am curious whether I can be more gentle with myself.
I do have commitments, and I still want to explore invitation rather than
threats.
Top of the Head: I would like to use more carrot and less stick.
Eyebrow: I can lighten the pressure without abandoning what matters.
Side of the Eye: I do need to get up.
Under the Eye: And I can speak to myself more gently.
Under the Nose: I can give my body time to arrive.
Chin: I am curious how that could change my day.
Collarbone: I give myself permission to explore options.
Under the Arm: I invite more flow into this transition.
Top of the Head: Stretching my wings, opening my heart, and activating my
body.
Take a breath and notice whether getting up feels even slightly less like a
fight.
Design a Morning You Can Believe
Experiment with small forms of welcome:
- allow a few minutes to stretch, snuggle, breathe, or orient;
- choose an alarm sound or gradual light that is less jarring;
- keep the phone away from the bed if it feels like an electronic leash and doing so is practical and safe;
- leave water nearby;
- prepare a cup, clothing, or another small gift for your morning self;
- identify one genuinely pleasant part of the coming day.
These are possibilities, not rules. Try what fits your body and circumstances. The deeper message is: I was thinking of you. We do not have to begin the day as enemies.
