Listen, Then Practice
Vigilance May Be Protecting More Than You Realize
Fear can become familiar competence: I know how to handle being on guard. Letting the alert level drop may expose grief, anger, sadness, loneliness, or uncertainty that feels less manageable. Safety itself may also have been punished or followed by a shock, teaching the body not to relax.
If calm feels dangerous, do not demand zero alert. Explore whether the dial can move down one notch.
Tapping: Develop a Range
Side of the Hand: Even though vigilance is familiar, and I may not know
what appears underneath it, I respect how capable I became around fear.
Side of the Hand: Even though feeling safe may not feel safe yet, I am open
to one degree more breathing room.
Top of the Head: I know how to handle being afraid.
Eyebrow: I may not know how to handle grief or anger.
Side of the Eye: I may not know what ordinary ease feels like.
Under the Eye: Perhaps staying alert helped me fit in or stay prepared.
Under the Nose: That learning happened for reasons.
Chin: And I have more capacity now.
Collarbone: It may be safe to feel a little safer.
Under the Arm: I can turn the dial down one number.
Top of the Head: I do not need one alert setting for every situation.
Eyebrow: A busy street calls for more attention.
Side of the Eye: A supported chair may allow less.
Under the Eye: I can practice choosing the level.
Under the Nose: I can respond if something changes.
Chin: My Primitive Brain does not have to go offline.
Collarbone: It can receive some relief.
Under the Arm: And I can have more room to breathe.
Match Alertness to the Actual Situation
The goal is not to be relaxed everywhere. It is to regain range. Look at the current environment, the task, available support, and what your body notices. Choose the alert level that fits now rather than carrying maximum vigilance from one setting into every other part of life.
If another emotion emerges as fear softens, welcome it as the next piece of information. Work with it gently rather than turning the alarm back up to avoid it.
