Listen, Then Practice
Honor the Disappointment Inside the Doubt
“It won’t work for me” may come from experience. You may have tried many approaches, worked hard, hoped deeply, and still felt disappointed. Beginning again can feel more dangerous than doing nothing because another attempt seems to put hope—and the possibility of failure—back on the line.
Mixed feelings make sense:
- I really want this to work.
- It had better not work, because change may not feel safe.
- Please let this be different.
- I do not want to have my hopes dashed again.
These voices do not need to be argued out of existence. They can be included in the work. The distinctive possibility here is not a grander promise. It is a different relationship within yourself: less fighting the Primitive Brain, more listening, appreciation, and collaboration.
Ground Before Asking for Hope
Feel your feet and the support under your body. Notice your fingertips touching you as you tap. Let the breath slow only as much as it naturally wants to.
You do not have to make yourself believe this will work. Begin with what is true: disappointment has happened, protection has reasons, and some part of you still had enough courage or curiosity to arrive here.
Tapping: What If We Tried This Together?
Side of the Hand: Even though this cannot possibly work for me, and I have
had my hopes dashed before, I would love a different solution and a different
outcome. I honor the part of me that does not want to be hurt again.
Side of the Hand: Even though I am not sure I deserve it, and it may not
feel safe to move forward, perhaps my Primitive Brain has powerful reasons for
protecting me. I am willing to become curious about those reasons.
Top of the Head: I would like a smart, powerful friend inside me.
Eyebrow: I have been trying to do it all alone.
Side of the Eye: I have been trying to move in spite of my Primitive Brain.
Under the Eye: I have not tried moving with it in this way.
Under the Nose: My heart may feel a little lighter considering that.
Chin: I am smart, too.
Collarbone: I have a lot of courage.
Under the Arm: I did not give up.
Top of the Head: Other things did not work the way I hoped.
Eyebrow: And I still found my way here.
Side of the Eye: I do not want to waste my power fighting myself.
Under the Eye: I am tired of struggling.
Under the Nose: I can take this a baby step at a time.
Chin: My Primitive Brain may have reasons to be afraid.
Collarbone: I think it is trying to protect me.
Under the Arm: What if I stopped yelling at it for a while?
Top of the Head: What if we worked with these fears together?
Eyebrow: What if I offered a clearer way to upgrade?
Side of the Eye: What if reprogramming meant relationship?
Under the Eye: What if this protector could help me move forward?
Under the Nose: Perhaps something could work differently then.
Chin: I do not have to guarantee the outcome.
Collarbone: Curiosity is enough for this step.
Under the Arm: I am ready to notice what happens next.
Take a breath and shake out your hands if that feels good.
Whatever Appears Is Useful Information
If you feel lighter, curious, or energized, let yourself notice and appreciate that. Do not rush past the good energy as if only the next problem matters.
If heavier thoughts, memories, or body sensations become clearer, that is not proof the practice failed. Write down the specific detail that surfaced. It may be the next aspect asking for careful attention: an old moment of disappointment, a fear of deserving, a sensation associated with trying, or a belief about what failure would mean.
You can tap with that aspect, bring it to trusted support, or pause. The aim is not to force hope. It is to make enough room for honest protection and honest possibility to be present together.
