Listen, Then Practice
Start With the Relationship That Is Actually Here
Sometimes the honest feeling is not appreciation. It is hatred, disgust, resentment, or the wish that this interfering part would simply go away. Trying to cover that hostility with spiritual or therapeutic language does not create a trustworthy relationship. The Primitive Brain already senses the fight.
Say quietly, I hate my Primitive Brain, and notice what happens. Is there a contraction, heat, collapse, relief, shame, numbness, or a strong yes or no? The body’s response helps measure the current relationship. You do not have to endorse the hostility to acknowledge it.
Tapping: Admit the Fight
Side of the Hand: Even though I hate this part of me sometimes, and I am
furious about how it stops me, I am willing to tell the truth about the fight
inside.
Side of the Hand: Even though I want it gone, perhaps this anger and this
protector both have something important to say.
Top of the Head: I hate being blocked.
Eyebrow: I hate freezing and pulling back.
Side of the Eye: I hate losing energy to this fight.
Under the Eye: Part of me wants this protector to disappear.
Under the Nose: And it may believe it has a very good reason to stay.
Chin: I do not have to pretend we are friends.
Collarbone: I can begin by being honest.
Under the Arm: I am listening to the anger in both directions.
Top of the Head: This Primitive Brain is tenacious.
Eyebrow: It has kept protecting me even while I fought it.
Side of the Eye: I wonder what it has been trying to prevent.
Under the Eye: I can listen without agreeing with every conclusion.
Under the Nose: I can bring new information without attacking.
Chin: Perhaps neither of us has to lose.
Collarbone: I am open to one degree less hostility.
Under the Arm: That would be a real change in our relationship.
Take a breath and check the original statement again: *I hate my Primitive
Brain.* Notice whether its intensity, location, or quality has changed at all.
Let the Primitive Brain Answer
Imagine the Primitive Brain as a figure, animal, sensation, voice, or felt presence. Ask what it wants you to know about its anger, refusal, or tenacity.
It may reveal an old danger, a promise never to be hurt that way again, or a belief that stopping you is the only way to protect you. It may not answer in words. A body sensation, memory, image, or impulse can be part of the dialogue.
Listening does not require surrendering your adult judgment. You are gathering the information needed for a more accurate and less violent way forward.
Measure Relationship Change, Not Forced Affection
You do not have to end by loving the Primitive Brain. A believable result might be less disgust, more curiosity, a clearer reason for the conflict, or a willingness to continue the conversation later.
The aim is not emotional correctness. It is to stop hiding the hostility so a real relationship can begin.
