Listen, Then Practice
From Inner Adversary to Powerful Ally
The Primitive Brain can feel like an internal parking brake. You may know what you want and still freeze, fog out, pull back, or end up in a tug-of-war with yourself. Pushing harder may create temporary movement, but it also reinforces the sense that some part of you must be defeated before you can live.
This Course begins from a different possibility: the part applying the brake is not stupid, lazy, or deliberately ruining your life. It is a powerful protector responding to what it has learned about danger, belonging, effort, and survival. When you bring it present-time information and invite it into a new relationship, the energy once used for resistance can become available for movement, pleasure, creativity, and connection.
The goal is not perfect control. It is enough cooperation inside that your whole system can move with you.
Bring Curiosity and Play Back Into Change
Change can become grim when every practice is another test to pass. The Primitive Brain responds to embodied experience: tone of voice, breath, movement, sensation, repetition, humor, and the felt quality of being with someone safe enough.
Experiment rather than perform. Notice what makes your body contract and what helps it soften. Let awkwardness be part of learning. A small moment of curiosity can be more useful than an impressive declaration your body does not believe.
Tapping: A Temporary Truce
Side of the Hand: Even though I have fought with this part of myself, and I
am tired of the parking brake and the tug-of-war, I am open to a temporary
truce.
Side of the Hand: Even though I do not know how to work with my Primitive
Brain yet, perhaps we can become curious together without demanding immediate
trust.
Top of the Head: I have tried pushing through.
Eyebrow: I have tried making this part wrong.
Side of the Eye: That fight has taken a lot of energy.
Under the Eye: Perhaps this protector has reasons.
Under the Nose: I can listen without giving up what matters to me.
Chin: I can bring present-time information.
Collarbone: We might learn a different way to work together.
Under the Arm: Even a temporary truce would be a start.
Top of the Head: I am allowed to be imperfect at this.
Eyebrow: I can bring some curiosity and play.
Side of the Eye: My body may communicate in sensations and feelings.
Under the Eye: I can notice without forcing an answer.
Under the Nose: I appreciate the courage it took to arrive here.
Chin: I appreciate the protector that kept trying.
Collarbone: We can take one believable step.
Under the Arm: I wonder what cooperation could feel like.
Take a comfortable breath. Let it leave with an audible exhale if that feels
good. Notice your feet and the support beneath you.
Begin With One Area That Matters
Choose one area where you want movement and where some part of you appears to hold back. It might involve work, health, relationships, visibility, money, rest, creativity, or another personally meaningful intention.
You do not have to solve it now. Simply notice:
- What do I want?
- What happens in my body when I imagine moving toward it?
- Where do I feel the brake, fog, freeze, or inner pull?
- What might help this step feel safer, kinder, or more believable?
That honest starting point gives the Course something real to work with. The relationship begins by noticing what is here.
