Changing our relationship with the Primitive Brain can shift us from internal conflict toward cooperation. These five steps are a repeatable way to meet a fear-based or protective pattern without blaming it, then invite a response that fits who we are and what is possible now.
1. Ground
Take a slow breath and feel your body. Wiggle your toes. Notice their texture and temperature from the inside and outside. Feel the support beneath you and look around the space you are actually in.
You might even count the tigers and lions in the room. Usually the answer is zero. This playful check helps orient the Primitive Brain to present conditions rather than leaving it alone with an old alarm.
Grounding is not a demand to calm down. It offers the body more current information: This is where I am. This is what is supporting me. This is what is and is not happening right now.
2. Appreciate
Find a few honest things to acknowledge about yourself. You noticed the reaction. You remembered to breathe. You are tapping. You care enough to try.
If it feels believable, appreciate the Primitive Brain for coming to the rescue—even when the rescue it offers is uncomfortable or no longer useful. It cares deeply about protection and uses the strategies it knows.
Appreciation interrupts the fear-and-blame cycle. It does not mean liking every reaction. It means recognizing effort and intention so a different conversation becomes possible.
3. Reframe
Look at the belief, fear, or decision from the perspective in which it was formed. A pattern that interferes with life now may have been intelligent, creative, or necessary when choices and resources were limited.
Instead of judging a younger self for making that decision, notice what the decision tried to accomplish. What did it protect? What did it preserve? What did that younger part understand about the world at the time?
Tap with the blame, anger, grief, or self-judgment that arises. Offer the younger self gratitude, respect, and the context that was not available then.
4. Upgrade
After acknowledging the old response, invite an upgrade. The original choice may have been excellent for its time while better options are available now.
Offer the protective part a new role rather than firing it. A part that once kept you invisible might help you notice which people and settings support authentic visibility. A part that stopped all movement might help you choose a small enough step. A part that scanned constantly for danger might also learn to notice support, opportunity, beauty, and trustworthy connection.
Invite collaboration. Listen for objections. Adjust the option until it feels more workable to the whole of you.
5. Integrate
Notice how the upgrade appears in ordinary life. Are you pausing rather than reacting? Seeing more options? Recovering more quickly? Taking a baby step that used to feel impossible? Receiving support with less struggle?
Integration includes enjoying these shifts. Let the Primitive Brain register what happened, what felt safe enough, and what worked. Repetition helps the new path become familiar.
This is not about performing the five steps perfectly. Return to Grounding whenever you need it. Appreciate each attempt. Reframe with kindness. Upgrade through co-creativity. Integrate what becomes possible. Baby steps count.
