Listen, Then Practice
Notice the Cost of Pulling Against Yourself
One part wants to move, speak, create, rest, connect, or change. Another pulls back. Each side may gain a little ground, but the whole person stays in the same struggle. There are rope burns, exhaustion, and mud—without meaningful movement toward what matters.
Willpower and self-punishment often tighten the rope. Even when the pushing part wins temporarily, the protected concerns remain and may return with more force.
Drop the Rope Without Giving Up
Dropping the rope does not mean giving in to fear or abandoning your desire. It means ending the internal contest long enough to become an observer and hear what each side protects.
Imagine the rope in your hands. Notice its texture, the strain in your arms, and the stance your body takes. Then imagine loosening your grip and letting it fall. You might open and shake your hands as a bodily signal that the fight is pausing.
From outside the contest, ask the part pulling back:
- What are you afraid would happen if we moved forward?
- What are you trying to preserve or prevent?
- What would help us work together?
Tapping: Retire From the Contest
Side of the Hand: Even though one part of me wants this and another part
does not, I honor how much energy both sides have invested in the struggle.
Side of the Hand: Even though I am afraid dropping the rope means losing, I
am open to a way forward that is not based on defeating myself.
Top of the Head: I want it.
Eyebrow: I do not want it.
Side of the Eye: I want to move.
Under the Eye: I need to stay safe.
Under the Nose: We keep pulling harder.
Chin: And the struggle keeps us stuck.
Collarbone: I am tired of the rope burns.
Under the Arm: I am ready to pause this contest.
Top of the Head: Dropping the rope is not giving up.
Eyebrow: It lets me listen from another place.
Side of the Eye: The part pulling back may have useful information.
Under the Eye: The part reaching forward carries something that matters.
Under the Nose: Neither part has to be humiliated.
Chin: We can look for a non-competitive solution.
Collarbone: We can pull together in a shared direction.
Under the Arm: I am open to less violence inside.
Take a breath. Open your hands and notice what changes when no one inside has
to win this moment.
Look for a Shared Direction
The forward-moving part may value freedom, expression, livelihood, love, or growth. The protective part may value safety, belonging, energy, dignity, or predictability. These values do not have to be enemies.
Ask what action could respect both. It may involve a smaller step, clearer boundary, better timing, more information, companionship, or permission to stop and reassess. Co-creation becomes possible when you are no longer using all your strength against yourself.
