Listen, Then Practice
Guided Practice: Reconnect Through the Five Senses
Choose a time when you do not need to drive or give close attention to something else. Sit or rest in a way that works for your body. If closing your eyes does not feel safe or comfortable, keep them softly open.
Feel your feet on the floor or against whatever supports them. Feel the weight of your body meeting the chair, bed, or ground. You do not have to hold yourself up all by yourself in this moment. Let gravity and the earth offer support.
Take a slow, comfortable breath. Notice whether the air feels cooler as it comes in and a little warmer as it leaves. On another breath, notice any taste or scent carried by the air. It might be food, trees, fabric, a familiar room, or almost nothing at all. Let the sensation come to you. You do not have to reach for it.
Bring awareness to the air touching your skin. Is it warm, cool, or moving? Notice clothing where it covers you—the softness, roughness, warmth, or gentle pressure. Feel your fingers, arms, face, legs, and toes. Notice the toes from the outside and, if you can, from the inside. Let your feet connect you with the ground and bring awareness back into the body.
If it feels good, place one hand on your heart area and one on your belly. Feel the warmth and pressure of your hands. Notice that the heart is beating and the lungs are breathing without needing constant direction. You might imagine these parts caring for you through everything they continue to do. Offer the belly some gentle appreciation, especially if it is a part you usually judge.
Now let sounds come to you: this voice, your own breath, a room sound, an airplane, an animal, traffic, wind, or quiet. There is no need to chase or name every sound. Receive what arrives. See whether any muscles are willing to soften while you remain here.
When you are ready, let your eyes open more fully. Allow colors, shapes, light, and texture to arrive. If attention rushes into visual thinking, return to the toes, the support beneath you, the air on your skin, the tastes and scents, and the sounds. Let seeing be one sense among the others rather than the only place you live.
Look around and notice what is true in this space. How many tigers or lions are here? What signs of support, shelter, or ordinary safety can your senses find? You are not required to feel completely safe. You are offering the Primitive Brain more of the present moment.
Let yourself receive whatever is available now: happiness, peace, a little less vigilance, or simply the experience of being here. Sense any connection with people or beings who also practice returning to themselves. You can receive that as companionship if it feels supportive.
Take one more comfortable breath. Feel your feet and body again. Appreciate the time you gave yourself. Repeating this practice several times helps the Primitive Brain become familiar with pausing, sensing, and receiving support. Five repetitions can be a gentle experiment, not a test you can fail.
