Listen, Then Practice
A Brake Can Be Intelligent Protection
When a car will not move because the parking brake is engaged, pressing the accelerator harder wastes energy and strains the system. Inner change can work the same way. A part of you may want to move while the Primitive Brain applies the brake because it expects danger.
That danger may come from old rules that once made sense. Speaking honestly, being visible, succeeding, resting, needing something, or making a mistake may have carried real consequences earlier in life. Freezing can be an intelligent response when action once felt unsafe.
The first step is not to wrench the brake loose. It is to understand what it protects.
Ask the Safety Question
Ground yourself enough to listen. Feel your feet, notice the support beneath you, and let the body know that you are asking rather than commanding.
Bring one desired action to mind and ask:
What about this does not feel completely safe?
Logic may immediately say the fear is ridiculous. Let the Primitive Brain answer anyway. Its language may be an image, tightening, nausea, numbness, memory, emotional wave, or impulse to escape. These responses are information, not proof that the present action is actually dangerous.
Tapping: Appreciate the Brake Before Releasing It
Side of the Hand: Even though part of me has the parking brake on, I
acknowledge that it may be trying very hard to keep me safe.
Side of the Hand: Even though I am frustrated by this freezing, there may
have been a time when stopping was intelligent. I am ready to notice what is
different now.
Top of the Head: This powerful parking brake.
Eyebrow: It does not trust this movement yet.
Side of the Eye: It may remember what happened before.
Under the Eye: It may believe the old rules still apply.
Under the Nose: I appreciate the intention to protect me.
Chin: And I want to update the information.
Collarbone: We have more choices and resources now.
Under the Arm: We can look for a step that feels safer.
Top of the Head: What about this does not feel completely safe?
Eyebrow: I am willing to hear more than one concern.
Side of the Eye: I do not have to force the brake off.
Under the Eye: We can reduce the step or add support.
Under the Nose: We can set a boundary or gather information.
Chin: We can separate old danger from present reality.
Collarbone: I am inviting cooperation rather than punishment.
Under the Arm: Let us notice whether the brake can soften a little.
Take a breath and imagine the action again. Notice whether the body response
has changed, even slightly.
Work With Each Aspect That Appears
The first concern may not be the only one. A step can feel unsafe because of visibility, judgment, exhaustion, conflict, uncertainty, responsibility, or what success might require next.
Name one aspect at a time. Appreciate its protective purpose. Bring accurate present-day information and ask what would make the next step more workable. Releasing the parking brake is a collaborative process, not a demand for one part of you to stop caring about safety.
