Watch, Then Practice

An Ulterior Motive Is an Undisclosed Motivation

Human beings have wants and motives. The stressful part is often not the want itself but the hidden exchange: kindness, gifts, or attention are offered, and only later does an obligation appear.

People may use this pattern because they do not know how to ask directly, do not trust that others can say no, or have learned that unspoken bargains are how needs get met. Understanding that does not require participating in the pattern.

Let the Body Signal Without Running the Whole Interaction

Imagine a familiar person approaching with that energetic undertone. Notice the bile, contraction, suspicion, or desire to move away.

Side of the Hand: Even though I sense an ulterior motive and part of me
feels sick about it, thank you, body, for letting me know. I am open to
relaxing enough to get clear about my yes and about whether an exchange
exists.

Top of the Head: It is okay to be generous.
Eyebrow: It is okay to make clear exchanges.
Side of the Eye: Sweetness can be sweet.
Under the Eye: Humans sometimes have undisclosed motives.
Under the Nose: My body is letting me know something matters.
Chin: Thank you, body, for letting me know.
Collarbone: I am releasing automatic obligation.
Under the Arm: My yes does not belong to someone else’s hidden deal.

Take a breath.

Make the Agreement Explicit

You can receive appreciation without promising a future yes. If a pattern exists, ask calmly:

I would enjoy dinner. In the past, dinner has sometimes come with an expectation that I do something in return. Is this simply dinner together, or is there an exchange you want to propose? I would like to know up front.

If those words feel impossible, tap with the fear of seeming rude or ungrateful and with the accumulated resentment from earlier hidden bargains.

Replace Scorekeeping with Co-Creation

Healthy generosity can be a clean gift. Healthy exchange can name what each person offers and requests. Neither requires keeping an invisible ledger.

As your no becomes trustworthy, people may learn that manipulation does not create traction. Direct asking becomes safer, and you can enjoy genuine kindness without automatically waiting for the hook.
