We all can feel overwhelmed at times… with projects, illness, pain, or even positive things. Just like when we feel other emotions, there is information and guidance in the overwhelm. It is often a sign that we need to stop, take a deep breath, and notice what we’re telling ourselves.
What is the belief behind your overwhelm? Do you feel like you have to do everything all at once? Do you need to do it all by yourself? Are you afraid to set boundaries and say no to people? Even one activity that is a NO for you can overwhelm your emotions, just like one hysterical child changes the birthday party.
Is your primitive brain contributing to the stress?
Some other thoughts that might be going on in the background:
- If I can just get this all done, I’ll be okay. I’ll be lovable.
- I should be able to do this all myself. If I can’t, I’m not a good, strong, or valuable person.
- Once I get this all done, it’ll be safe to relax… but not before!
You may have a different belief entirely, or there may be several. Identifying and tapping on the thoughts behind the overwhelm can bring a lot of relief. And many times we’re more efficient and productive when we’re not feeling stressed and harried.
