Ever Need to Apologize?
Moira Gunn's approach to apologizing: [via technation]
1. Say clearly what you did that you are apologizing for.
2. Describe specifically the harm you believe it caused.
3. Come up with some way to make up for this harm (substantive, positive,
perhaps symbolic).
4. Say you are sorry.
5. Describe the remorse you feel (and don’t make it sound like you are just
sorry for getting caught or because you’ve suffered a setback as a result of
your action).
6. Commit yourself to finding out why you did what you did (we’re human,
but we do have choice).
7. Make a plan for how you will avoid ever harming someone in this very
same way again.
8. Don’t be surprised by a miracle: commitment to the apology, over time,
will allow people you have hurt to feel compassion for you, and maybe,
forgiveness.
