			<content:encoded><![CDATA[<p></p><p>Why is <strong><em><a title="trauma" href="/trauma" target="_blank">clearing trauma</a></em></strong> so important and so beneficial in this day and age?</p>
<p>It can fundamentally change how we look at the world and how much possibility we can create!</p>
<p>Think about a time 10,000 years ago. If you broke your leg back then, you might have fashioned a split out of a couple of tree limbs and some leather. But from that point on, didn&#8217;t you just <strong><em>have to cope</em></strong>? There were no X-rays or surgeons, no plaster casts or titanium pins. Your leg might hurt, it might heal badly and make it hard to move, but you didn&#8217;t have much choice&#8230;</p>
<p><strong><em>Your choice was either to cope or be leopard food.</em></strong> And so, the humans that survived to procreate developed coping mechanisms. We CAN just &#8220;get by.&#8221;</p>
<p>Unless you <strong><em>actively choose</em></strong> to see things from a new perspective, you will be <strong><em><a href="/pkg-stuck/" target="_blank">subconsciously stuck</a></em></strong> in that survival mode&#8230; even if there IS a healing option available right at your fingertips!</p>
<p><a href="http://www.thrivingnow.com/coping-works/istock_000011192780xsmall/" rel="attachment wp-att-6857"><img class="alignleft size-full wp-image-6857" title="Rock 'n Shoe" src="http://cdn.thrivingnow.com/wp/wp-content/uploads/2011/11/iStock_000011192780XSmall.jpg" alt="" width="298" height="197" /></a>Let’s say we lived in a world where—if you got a rock in your shoe—that was it, you could NOT get it out. It&#8217;s hopeless. The rock was something you&#8217;d have to live with forever. What would friends and family say to you about this new pain of yours?</p>
<p>“Well, you just gotta do what you gotta do.”</p>
<p>“You just gotta learn to make the best of it.”</p>
<p>&#8220;Stop whining and tough it out!&#8221;</p>
<p>And so you&#8217;d cope, right?</p>
<p>You’d start by trying to keep the weight off of it, trying to walk in a way that caused the least pain. Your body and mind would do everything they could to <strong><em>adapt to that rock</em></strong>. Ouch. After a month or two, you’d have disconnected from your foot, wouldn’t you? And hate that part of you&#8230;</p>
<p>“Well, I’ve got one foot still. I can just kind of hobble around&#8230;”</p>
<p>Your gait would change to minimize the pain. Now what’s going to happen to your hip? It’s going to cope, right? It’s going to start adapting. Your back’s going to change. Your whole spinal adjustment may change. And pretty soon, you’re still making it… despite that rock in your foot. And if there was nothing else that we could do&#8230;well, that’s the best that you could do, right?</p>
<p>Luckily, we live in a world where you CAN take rocks out of your shoes. And we have marvelous technologies that let us do much more than cope with even serious issues.</p>
<p>We live in a day now where someone who loses their lower leg on one side, but is an athlete, a sprinter, a runner… they may seriously looks at whether they should have their other leg amputated so that they can use amazing new technologies that allow them to sprint even faster than most humans.</p>
<p>We’ve entered a period of medical technology where if you have broken your leg and it was set wrong and is now three inches shorter, they would look at re-breaking the leg in order for you to be set right.</p>
<p><strong>Old, Unhealed Trauma Can Be Set Right Now, Too</strong></p>
<p>And now, we’re looking at trauma as something that can be dealt with in the same way… that can be INTERNALLY SET RIGHT even decades later. But culturally, when I grew up, if something bad happened&#8230; the spiritual answer, the most divine answer about what to do if someone did you wrong was&#8230;</p>
<p><strong><em>Forgive and forget.</em></strong> With a heavy emphasis on the <em>forget</em> part! If you can’t forgive, at least forget. And stop whining about it! (That was the best they had to offer.)</p>
<p>Suppressing unhealed traumas is a great coping mechanism&#8230; but ONLY if you can’t do anything better about it.</p>
<p><strong><em>There’s still something actively going on inside of you around undischarged trauma&#8230; they are like rocks in your shoes. </em></strong></p>

<p><strong><em>It’s 3 am.</em></strong> You are awake, and you  HURT. Alone in the dark, trying to rest, exhausted from the pain&#8230; where can  you turn at this hour? All these negative emotions flare up and start rambling  around inside your head… “I’ll never get better … <strong><em>Why me?!</em></strong> … What  did I do to deserve this? … <strong><em>What if it never gets better?</em></strong>”</p>

They are consciously trying to heal and do the right thing&#8230; but subconsciously they are angry at their body for hurting in the first place. </em></strong></p>
<p><strong><em>They feel like their body has let it them down and not been there to support them, not been strong enough, and isn&#8217;t healing like it should. It&#8217;s as if the body is saying &#8220;Hey! You are sending me mixed messages! In one breath you&#8217;re telling me not to feel pain, and in  the next you&#8217;re telling me you are mad at me for expressing the energy to get the pain out and do the healing.&#8221;</em></strong></p>

<p>We would also ask&#8230; how do you feel when someone tells you <strong><em>stop feeling that</em></strong> ?</p>
<p>We&#8217;ve had people do that to us, and it feels frustrating and confusing. Our bodies feel that way when we tell them to stop hurting. Instead, it can really help to start where you are. <strong><em>Just admitting we feel what we feel can be very empowering and liberating.</em></strong></p>

<p><strong>Karate Chop:</strong> Even though my body hurts, and I am angry at it for hurting, I&#8217;d like to find a new way of looking at this.</p>
<p>Even though I&#8217;m in pain, and I blame my body&#8230; after all it MUST be my body&#8217;s fault&#8230; what if my body is holding old emotions and energies for me, and that&#8217;s what is causing the pain?</p>
<p>Even though I am really hurting and that makes me mad at my body, and I am so angry at my body for causing me pain&#8230; I bet my body doesn&#8217;t want to hurt either. What if I could work with my body instead of against it?</p>
<p><strong>Top of the Head:</strong> I HATE my body.<br />
<strong>Eyebrow:</strong> It hurts me so much.<br />
<strong>Side of the Eye:</strong> I&#8217;m so angry at it.<br />
<strong>Under the Eye:</strong> That&#8217;s the truth.<br />
<strong>Under the Nose:</strong> And my body <em>really</em> hurts&#8230;<br />
<strong><strong>Chin:</strong></strong> No matter how much I tell it to stop.<br />
<strong>Collarbone:</strong> I am pissed at my body&#8230;<br />
<strong>Under the Arm:</strong> And I blame it for all this hurt.</p>
<p><strong>Top of the Head:</strong> What if my body needs my help?<br />
<strong>Eyebrow:</strong> What if asked for help over and over&#8230;<br />
<strong>Side of the Eye:</strong> And I didn&#8217;t know the language?<br />
<strong><strong>Under the Eye:</strong></strong> I am really tired of it hurting,<br />

<strong>Under the Arm:</strong> I ask for peace and clarity.</p>

<strong>Side of the Eye:</strong> I feel angry at my body&#8230;<br />

<strong><strong>Chin:</strong></strong> I can tap on that and learn to listen.<br />

<p>If you weren&#8217;t angry at your body, who might you be angry at? Human beings are great at projecting unwanted emotions onto other people and other things.</p>

But when you <strong><em>hurt.</em></strong>.. your energy is low, your focus is off, and your vibration is not as high as you would like. Still, a lot of us were taught to <strong><em>tough it out</em></strong> and push through&#8230; to grit our teeth and do it anyway.</p>
<p>But isn&#8217;t that rather like trying to weed the garden holding a large cinder block in one arm? Painful, exhausting, frustrating, and not efficient!</p>
<p>Doesn&#8217;t it make sense to let go of the cinder block of pain first?</p>

<p>If you&#8217;ve ever been in an accident, and are still suffering from pain in those areas of your body long after it &#8220;should&#8221; have healed, you may want to ask your body:</p>
<p><strong><em>Are you still bracing for impact?</em></strong></p>
<p>You&#8217;ll hear us talk about the <a href="http://www.thrivingnow.com/primitive-brain">primitive brain</a> and how a trauma can get FROZEN there until it is released. What most people don&#8217;t realize is that the tissues of our body ALSO stores trauma. And they can maintain painful, restrictive, inflexible <strong><em>holding patterns</em></strong> long, long after the physical tissues have healed.</p>
<p>For example, back in 1999 I injured my spine in a skiing accident. The following year I regularly had intense, off the chart pain from disc damage. My body helped me out by <strong><em>splinting</em></strong>&#8230; it protected me from further damage and pain by holding all the muscles of my back and pelvis in a state of tight vigilance.</p>
<p>Many years later, as I sought to take my body to new levels of flexibility and expression, guess what&#8230; parts of my body still remembered aspects of the injury. They were still on some level &#8220;bracing for impact.&#8221;</p>
<p>If you want to shift this kind of bracing, you can FORCE IT. While that may work for awhile, it often comes back to literally bite you in the butt down the road. Instead, you could try doing some <a href="http://www.thrivingnow.com/tapping">tapping</a> in dialogue with that part of your body.</p>
<p>&#8220;Even though my body is still bracing for impact, I deeply and completely accept all of me.&#8221;<br />&#8220;Even though the tissues that were injured are trying to protect me, I accept all of me.&#8221;<br />&#8220;Even though I don&#8217;t like being restricted, I do like to protect myself, and I&#8217;m open to exploring a new balance and expanded limits.&#8221;</p>
<p>I did that and then tapped through the points using &#8220;this bracing for impact in my back.&#8221; In fact, I did this once again just moments ago as I felt into the tissues of my back and could feel an &#8220;expectation of re-injury.&#8221; I tapped on that, too.</p>
<p>What was the result? As I&#8217;ve seen so often with my clients who have suffered accidents and do have structural changes in their body caused by the injury, what I notice is a <em><strong>subtle shift</strong></em>. My spine feels more open, relaxed, and receptive. My unhelpful level of caution has subsided. I feel myself more willing to dream of new adventures.</p>
<p>If your body is still bracing for impact, tap on those feelings. Work WITH your body. Know that these reflexive responses &#8212; while no longer as necessary as they once were &#8212; are still here to help. When you tap, acknowledge and appreciate the subtle changes that do occur. With old injuries and holding patterns, you&#8217;ll likely notice that the emotional suffering is the first to go. The body will then start playing with new postures and increasing flexibility&#8230; bit by bit&#8230; baby step by baby step.</p>
<p>The difference will be that you will no longer be STUCK in the old holding pattern. You&#8217;ll be healing more deeply and completely than ever before.</p>

<p>Chronic, long term stress is very hard on the body and mind. It can lead to irritability, exhaustion, difficulty in concentrating, and physical symptoms such as headache, racing heart, fatigue, and body aches.</p>
<p><strong>What is stress?</strong> We feel stressed when we feel like we&#8217;re failing to cope with life&#8217;s demands. Those demands might be emotional or physical, actual or imagined.</p>
<p>Our primitive brain doesn&#8217;t know the difference between being stressed over a demanding boss and distress over lack of food or saber tooth tigers in the bushes. In either case, it sends chemicals to the body to deal with the threat. Of course modern threats don&#8217;t require quite the same physical response as they did 10,000 years ago. (Running away screaming or socking our boss in the face is not likely to win us points at work&#8230;.)</p>
<p>Our bodies are equipped to deal with short term stress and resolution. It is one of the things that challenges us and makes us stronger. But being constantly flooded with stress hormones can task the body. Stress has been linked with all kinds of illness and premature aging.</p>
<p>There are many causes of stress. We cover three fundamental causes of stress in this package:</p>
<p>1) Lack of <strong>boundaries</strong><br />
2) <strong>Overwhelm</strong> &#8211; having more to do than we feel capable of<br />
3) Feeling <strong>criticized</strong> by internal or external judges.</p>
<p><em><strong>Boundaries </strong></em>give us the power to decide what is ours to focus on and what belongs to others. They helps us say <em><strong>No </strong></em>when that is right for us. Feeling comfortable setting boundaries can reduce the amount of stress we feel&#8230; and feel more empowered about what we do want to pay attention to.</p>
<p>Feeling <em><strong>overwhelmed </strong></em>is always stressful. If we can&#8217;t get everything done that we feel we <strong>need</strong> to, we feel like we&#8217;re failing. Sometimes we use the fear of &#8220;what might happen&#8221; to drive ourselves to do more than we feel capable of, and often more than is good for us. Reducing overwhelm will often help us feel calmer and more confident that we are in control of our lives.</p>
<p>When others are telling us what we did wrong, we certainly don&#8217;t feel like we are thriving! Sometimes the <strong><em>inner critics</em></strong> can be just as loud or louder than the external ones. Being constantly criticized is very stressful. Quieting those voices and learning to be more gentle and objective can bring more peaceful and restful energy into our lives.<strong><em> </em></strong></p>

<p style="padding-left: 30px;">While most of us are aware of the healing influences of the placebo effect, few are aware of its evil twin, the nocebo effect. Just as surely as positive thoughts can heal, negative ones-including the belief&nbsp;we are susceptible to an illness or have been exposed to a toxic condition-can actually manifest the undesired realities of those thoughts.</p>
<p>Japanese children allergic to a poison ivy-like plant took part in an experiment where a leaf of the poisonous plant was rubbed onto one forearm. As a control, a nonpoisonous leaf resembling the toxic plant was rubbed on the other forearm. As expected almost all of the children broke out in a rash on the arm rubbed with the toxic leaf and had no response to the imposter leaf. </p>
<p>What the children did not know was that the leaves were purposefully mislabeled. The negative thought of being touched by the poisonous plant led to the rash produced by the nontoxic leaf! In the majority of cases, no rash resulted from contact with the toxic leaf that was thought to be the harmless control. The conclusion is simple: positive perceptions enhance health, and negative perceptions precipitate dis-ease. This mind-bending example of the power of belief was one of the founding experiments that led to the science of psychoneuroimmunology. </p>
<p>Considering that a minimum of one third of all medical healings are attributed to the placebo effect, what percentage of illness and disease might be the result of negative thought in the nocebo effect? Perhaps more than we think, especially since psychologists estimate that 70 percent of our thoughts are negative and redundant.</p>
